Walmart's Launches bettergoods Brand (2024)

Walmart recently launched bettergoods, a new private label with “quality, trend-forward, and chef-inspired food.” It’s been their largest food launch in twenty years, and I’m happy that they’re committed to this so far.

During early 2020 and part of 2021, Marcela and I were trying to stretch our dollars. We had been loyal Publix fans, but the price points didn’t make sense compared to the value of shopping at Walmart.

Once we made the switch, I’ve never looked back. I’ve become a loyal Walmart shopper and look forward to placing my orders online weekly. One of my food highlights of the week is to order one or two new items for us to try.

I’m excited to see the bettergoods products debut and trickle out onto the website, a few every day. This gives me an opportunity to buy them gradually, as opposed to if they had launched all at once and overwhelmed us. And you can’t beat the fact that most items are priced under five bucks.

How is bettergoods?

Well, so far, so good. I’ve documented below what I’ve tried, and I thought the macarons and the cold-brew coffee were the best of the bunch.

I just bought the newly released bettergoods dry-rub chicken wings, potato chips, and maple chicken sausage patties. Once, I’ve tried them a couple of times, I’ll add those thoughts to this post.

In the meantime, check out my findings and let me know what you’ve tried in the comments or via the contact form.

bettergoods Ice Cream

My wife Marcela and I have tried several regular bettergoods ice cream flavors, such as Double Vanilla, Dulce de Leche, Strawberries and Cream, and Ultimate Chocolate.

But it does not get any better than the Cold Brew Coffee ice cream pint ($3.44). It’s creamy and has the right amount of coffee without being too overpowering.

We have purchased it on several occasions, and it is on our regular ice cream rotation with other things like Ben and Jerry’s Cookie Dough, Blue Bell Krunch Bars, and Häagen-Daz Vanilla Bean.

So far, these are the other bettergoods ice cream flavors: Chocolate Covered Cherries, Double Vanilla, Dulce de Leche, Pistachio Salted Caramel, Strawberries and Cream, and Ultimate Chocolate.

If you’re a non-dairy plant-based dessert fan, then these oatmilk-based flavors will be right up your alley: Blueberry Swirl, Chocolate, Mint Chocolate Chip, Salted Caramel, Strawberry, and Vanilla.

bettergoods Cake Pops

Chocolate Cake Pops (5.4 ounces, four pops) will set you back $5.67. Is that a fair price for four of them?

I’m not a fan of cake pops, so I’m not going to pretend to be an expert on the topic. However, I love a good chocolatey cake, and this pop tastes like a brownie to me.

Generally, I steer clear of anything with sprinkles, yet these tiny sprinkle specks did not prevent me from enjoying this guy. I tried my best to eat each one in four bites, but that plan went out the window when Marcela bit half of the second one right off the bat. Oh well, there went that!

There are also Birthday Cake and Raspberry flavors, which might be more your style. I should have bought Birthday Cake, but I’m not hating on the choice I made.

bettergoods Cheese

I was excited when the Cheddar, Gouda, and Gruyere Shredded Cheeses (7 ounces, $2.67) showed up in a Walmart search.

It didn’t take me long to go through the bag. I used it on a homemade chili cheese dog, which I melted in an air fryer. Best of all, a giant handful of the blend melted perfectly on a six-egg omelet.

I’m happy that bettergoods went with the farmhouse-style shredded cheese. It makes for better texture than the thin kind and more even melting across dishes.

Also available are the Sharp Cheddar, Swiss, and Gruyere Shredded Cheeses for casseroles, soups, and grilled sandwiches and Low-Moisture Part-Skim Mozzarella, Colby, Gruyere, and Asiago Shredded Cheeses for stuffed mushrooms, pasta and grilled sandwiches.

A couple of plant-based cheese alternatives exist, like the Cheddar, Mozzarella, and Cheddar-Mozzarella.

bettergoods Butter

The bettergoods Black Truffle Butter and Lemon Pepper Butter were the first two butters ($2.56) out of the gate. The packaging is reminiscent of another Walmart private brand, but it looks to have disappeared from the website.

The black truffle was the better of the two. I followed their instructions and melted it on potatoes, pasta, and scrambled eggs. The truffle taste wasn’t overbearing, which was my initial fear. If you’re a truffle fan, I could see you finding a use for this one.

The lemon pepper didn’t do it for me. I put this guy on pan-cooked grilled chicken and air-fried chicken wings. It was way too potent and needed to be diluted somehow. You might be able to find a flavor balance if you tinker around with it, but I’d instead go with a lemon pepper seasoning instead.

Also, there’s something off-putting about the texture of these kinds of butter.

In addition to these flavors, I’ve seen Cinnamon Honey Butter and Garlic, Parm, and Basil Butter on the website.

bettergoods Macarons

The macarons were one of the best bettergoods products we ate, and I’m being generous with the “we.” In case you have no idea what a macaron is, it’s a French meringue cookie sandwich.

I was able to eat one—that’s right, only one—of the coffee macarons, which was excellent. Marcela ate the entire box over a weekend, and by the time I went looking for them, they were gone.

I tried to find the bettergoods macarons on the Walmart website, but it appears that the page was deleted, which is odd.

bettergoods Cookie Bites

I never snapped a picture of the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie ($3.94) when I purchased them in early May, which should explain the stock photo I used above. Actually, they were the first bettergoods product that I bought.

After pulling them out of the package and giving them a once over, I was positive I was gonna love it. Then I took a bite, and that all changed.

The size and texture of the cookie bites were perfect, but Marcela and I did not like the taste. We hated them so much that, unlike the macarons, we disposed of them in the trash.

Other ones I ran across on the site were the Coconut Chocolate Cookie Dough and Sea Salt Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookie Bites.

What Else Is There?

The selection of bettergoods is still growing, but so far, I’ve seen Cauliflower-crust Pizzas, Chicken Tenders, Chicken Wings, Empanadas, plant-based Mac and Cheez, Potato Chips, Sausage Link (or Patties), Salsa, Sparkling Water, Tortilla Chips and even Gruyere and Green Onion Potato Croquettes!

I can’t wait to see what other things are up their sleeves. I did write Walmart in an attempt to get a listing of all the bettergoods products, but they were “unable to share full product list” with me.
