I get asked the gender swap question a lot by my fellow outlaws in the Wild West. And I hate to break it to you – as of now, there is no way to change your character‘s gender once you‘ve picked it at the start of Red Dead Online. I‘ve dug through every in-game menu, scoured update notes, and tested just about every trick to no avail.
Trust me, I feel your pain. I picked my rough-and-tumble cowboy on a whim, not realizing I was signing up for a lifetime commitment. Now I long for the freedom of creating a heroine to ride the range. But we can‘t always get what we want in life…or at least in Rockstar games.

- Experiment with Clothing Styles: Mix and match all sorts of wardrobe items to embrace a more fluid style. Go ultra-masculine one day, and soft cowboy the next.
- Modify Voice and Movement: Adjust pitch and mannerisms through emotes and roleplaying.
- Play with Posses: Join groups aligned to your identity, or form your own! Great for support and sensibility.
- Focus on Freedom: Ride that open world! Legendary bounties and side quests await.

Nothing confirmed yet, but rumors suggest player feedback around the restrictive nature of identity has caught Rockstar‘s eye.
In the past, major community requests like ponchos and advanced combat mechanics have gradually made their way into updates. With next-gen consoles enabling ever more advanced graphics and features, broadening the diversity and representation possible in-game seems closer than ever.

Starting Anew: Creating Another Character
Let‘s mosey back to current realities though…because if swapping genders is driving you to absolute distraction, there is one more permanent option available:
Full deletion and recreation of your character.
By selecting the "Delete Character" function from the main Pause Menu > Player tab, you can clear your existing cowboy conundrum for good.
This will wipe your entire current playthrough and path thus far. But by riding into those burning sunset embers emerges a dawn of new possibility!
Just be aware that you will lose everything besides cash/gold bars earned.
So make sure you‘re ready to commit before taking that fateful plunge partner.
