BREAKING NEWS: $20 million on runway for Miami International Airport projectsThree projects at Miami International Airport costing more than $20 million, half to be paid by the state, were enabled in a resolution that county commissioners passed Tuesday without comment. The agreements are with the Florida Department of Transportation.The largest grant, $5.5 million, will go to an $11 million project for utility modifications and improvements to the South Terminal apron. BREAKING NEWS: $10 billion MetroCenter downtown a high reachSome may think the sky’s the limit on the $10 billion MetroCenter project that Miami-Dade commissioners envision for downtown. The Federal Aviation Administration might take the wind out of those sails, however, since its building height limit anywhere near airports is 499 feet, down from 500 feet just a few years ago.There are, however, exceptions. ON TRACK LOCALLY: The Northeast Corridor rail line to link downtown and Aventura is on track, at least locally. “We expect the acceptance to enter engineering in August,” Josiel Ferrer-Diaz of the Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works told the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust last week. “That will line up exactly with a 60% submission for design of the project,” which is to offer commuter rail 19 hours a day, seven days a week starting in December 2027 over 13.5 miles of the Florida East Coast Railway corridor. Nationally, the $263.7 million that President Joseph Biden recommended to help fund the service in his $7.3 billion budget is pending approval by Congress, which frequently ignores presidential budget requests. The Northeast Corridor is one of six in Miami-Dade’s Smart Program to develop rapid mass transit to relieve traffic congestion. BREAKING NEWS: 18% of real estate sales in Miami-Dade go to foreignersForeign buyers’ share of South Florida’s real estate purchases has increased significantly in recent years, accounting for 18% of total sales in 2023, nearly nine times the national average and more than double Florida’s average.Despite rising costs and a shrinking housing supply, foreign homebuyers purchased $5.1 billion of South Florida residential properties in 2023, according to the Miami Association of Realtors.
