FUN THINGS GOING ON. SHELDON. THIS AREA HERE IS CALLED PERRY SQUARE. IT’S THE MAIN STAGING AREA FOR THE ECLIPSE IN ERIE ON MONDAY. NOW SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES LEADING UP TO THE EVENT HAVE ALREADY STARTED TODAY, BEGINNING WITH NASA. WHAT IS AN ECLIPSE? WHY DOES IT HAPPEN? WHY DOESN’T IT HAPPEN RIGHT INSIDE THE LINCOLN COMMUNITY CENTER LIBRARY? NASA EXPLAINS THE PHENOMENON OF THE ECLIPSE TO PARENTS AND CHILDREN WHO ARE EAGER TO WITNESS THE EVENT. MONDAY. WE’RE GOING TO DO A LITTLE DEMONSTRATION THAT SHOWS THAT THEORETICALLY, IT SHOWS THAT AN ECLIPSE SHOULD HAPPEN EVERY MONTH, BUT IT DOESN’T. WHY NOT? PENN STATE BEHREND SCHOOL OF SCIENCE IS PREPARING TO HOST UP TO 1500 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM MULTIPLE STATES, PROFESSIONAL ASTRONOMERS THAT WE’RE GOING TO HAVE THEM WORKING AND FOLLOWING THE ECLIPSE AND HAVING THE STUDENTS VIEW BOTH THROUGH THE TELESCOPE AND IN SECONDARY METHODS. SO WE’RE IN A TELEVISED SOME OF THE TELESCOPES SO GROUPS OF STUDENTS CAN SEE IT ALL AT ONCE. FOOD BUSINESSES IN DOWNTOWN ERIE ARE BRACING TO FEED MORE PEOPLE THAN THEY EVER HAVE. DURING ONE EVENT, CATFISH KITCHEN EXPECTS TO SELL OUT. GONNA BE PRETTY CROWDED IN THIS TOWN, YOU KNOW, EXPECTING A LOT OF BUSINESSES TO DO VERY WELL. THIS IS FLAGSHIP CITY FOOD HALL ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE ECLIPSE STAGING AREA DOWNTOWN. IT’S HOME TO NINE CULINARY VENDORS WHO EXPECT TO BE PACKED TO CAPACITY. WE’RE EXPECTING BIG CROWDS, NOT JUST TODAY, BUT TOMORROW, LEADING UP INTO SUNDAY AND THEN MONDAY, WHICH IS THE ACTUAL ECLIPSE WE’VE NEVER SEEN AN EVENT OF THIS MAGNITUDE EVER IN OUR HISTORY. I MEAN, WE’VE HAD LARGE EVENTS IN THE PAST, BUT THIS IS NOT ONLY A LARGE EVENT, BUT IT’S ALL OVER THE COUNTY. IT’S NOT JUST IN ONE LOCATION, SO IT’S TRULY UNIQUE. Erie's Public Schools are closed on Monday, restaurants that are usually closed on Mondays will open, representatives from NASA will have a prominent presence downtown, and a gathering of people never seen before in Erie will flood the city.It is the highly coveted anticipation for the eclipse, expected to be seen in near complete totality in the city along the lake.VisitErie expects more than 200,000 people from several states. "We've never seen an event of this magnitude ever in our history," says Christine Temple, VisitErie communications director. "We've had large events in the past, but this is not only a large event, but it's all over the county. It's not just in one location; it's all over the county, so it's truly unique."VisitErie also says hotels in the city are booked at 99 percent capacity.
