In an episode that was compared by many fans to Russell's series four instalment, Turn Left, Millie Gibson was placed front and centre as The Doctor barely made an appearance.

After accidentally stepping on a fairy circle in Wales, Ruby found that The Doctor had mysteriously vanished, and soon noticed that she was being followed by a strange woman, who always kept a fixed 73 yards distance from her.

To make matters worse, Ruby learned that anyone who spoke to the woman would run away from her in horror, leading to her being alienated from her loves ones and even UNIT after seeking their help.

Drawing comparisons to Russell's acclaimed BBC drama Years and Years, Ruby decided to use her newfound life to stop a rising politican, who The Doctor had previously warned would come close to plunging the UK into a nuclear war.

The episode then concluded with a jaw-dropping reveal in its final moments, that the woman in question was Ruby herself, sent to her as a warning to stop The Doctor from stepping on the fairy circle, and thuse setting the episode's events in motion.

Taking the show in a Black Mirror-inspired direction, Dot and Bubble saw The Doctor and Ruby attempt to save the bratty Lindy Pepper-Bean from mysterious slug creatures

However the episode's final moments take a dark turn, with The Doctor's help is refused by the Finetime citizens he'd saved, as they he'wasn't one of them'

It was the first time that this Doctor encountered such stark racism, and Ncuti's performance in emulating the Time Lord's rage earned praise from viewers

Taking the show in a Black Mirror-inspired direction, Dot and Bubble saw The Doctor and Ruby attempt to save the bratty Lindy Pepper-Bean from mysterious slug creatures that had invaded the idyllic town of Finetime.

Set in the distant future, residents of Finetime are bound by a literal social media bubble, unable to take a single step forward without guidance from the virtual presence that surrounds them.

While the episode opens with the warning that these human-eating slugs are the real threat, it soons reveals that the humans that The Doctor and Ruby attempt to save are far more sinister.

The Doctor and Ruby guide Lindy to safety - unaware that shehappily allows her idol Ricky September to be killed by the now-evil AI that the social media system came from, in a bid to save her own skin.

The Time Lord is then floored when she and other residents of Finetime refuse his help, insisting he 'wasn't one of them.'

It was the first time that this Doctor - played by a black actor for the first time in the show's history - encountered such stark racism, and Ncuti's performance in emulating the Time Lord's rage earned praise from viewers.

Rather than conclude the episode on a happy note, it ended with The Doctor angrily returning to the TARDIS, having accepted that Lindy and other residents on Finetime would rather die than accept his help.

Rogue - The Doctor shares his first same-sex kiss

Anticipation for the sixth episode of Who's new series was high after Jonathan Groff joined the cast as the mysterious bounty hunter Rogue

Sparks soon fly beween Rogue and The Doctor, and the pair share a historic kiss, with fans hoping that the episodes' final moments hint the handsome hero may return in the future

Even before Who's Bridgerton-inspired romp hit screens, anticipation was high as it had been previously announced thatBroadway star Jonathan Groff would be joining the cast.

The episode sees The Doctor and Ruby travel back to 1813 to attend a Regency Ball, and the Time Lord's head is quickly turned by an intergalactic bounty hunter named Rogue, who is hunting the alien race The Chuldur.

Sparks soon fly between the pair, and after confirming to Rogue that he was not the alien assassin that he was looking for, the Time Lord bonds with the space anti-hero over their shared losses.

It leads to a charged moment in the TARDIS, where The Doctor invites Rogue to travel with him, before they join forces to stop the bird-like Chulder.

The episode was packed with odes to the racy Netflix drama, including a dramatic dance scene where Rogue proposes to The Doctor to catch the Chulder's attention, after discovering their penchant for cosplaying.

But The Doctor's new romance is short-lived, as he is forced to choose between sending the Chulder to a barren dimension, and saving Ruby after she becomes trapped in the transport gate.

Admitting he can't let his friend go, The Doctor and Rogue share a passionate kiss, the first time the Time Lord has shared a same-sex smooch in the show's history.

Rogue then sacrifices himself to save Ruby, with his final words to The Doctor being 'find me,' and fans have already called for Rogue's return in the future.

The final scenes certainly hinted at the possibility that The Doctor and Rogue could reunite in a later series, as the episode concluded with the Time Lord wearing the ring that Rogue proposed with, hopefully cementing a reunion in a series to come.

The Legend Of Ruby Sunday - The One Who Waits is FINALLY revealed

In Doctor Who's penultimate episode, fans were floored when it was revealed that the God Of Death Sutekh had returned

In a shocking cliffhanger, it was revealed that the mysterious woman who stalked The Doctor's travels was little more than a pawn in the God's game

The episode also finally began to offer answers about the identity of Ruby's birth mother, with the hope that this mystery will finally be solved in this weekend's finale

In the series' penultimate episode, Doctor Who fans hoped that they would finally discover the truth about the mysterious woman who had appeared in multiple incarnations throughout the TARDIS' adventures.

Played by actress Susan Twist, the woman appeared as a variety of characters, from a 60s tea maid and an AI-generated ambulance, to finally, the modern tech mogul Susan Triad.

In the episode, The Doctor and Ruby sought help from UNIT to find out the truth about the woman, and answers about the companion's birth mother, who abandoned her daughter at a snow-covered church on Christmas Eve.

The return of UNIT also saw Bonnie Langford reprise her role as companion Mel, along with Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart.

The opening scenes were quick to address the theory that Susan could be the Doctor's long-absent granddaughter, hinting that it could be a giant red herring.

The Doctor tried to identify Ruby's mother by reconstructing CCTV footage using a time window, but they were unsuccessful.

A dark red cloud then appeared to engulf the TARDIS itself, before breaking into the real world, revealing that Susan Triad was just a pawn in the plans of a far more terrifying villain.

In some of the show's scariest scenes yet, it was revealed that the long-imprisoned God Of Death Sutekh had been waiting in the TARDIS, and finally unveiled himself and his plot to turn the universe to dust.

It remains to be seen whether The Doctor can bring an end to this threat, and finally reveal the truth about her birth mother.

Doctor Who's series finale will be released at midnight on Saturday on BBC iPlayer in the UK, and will air at 6:40pm on BBC One that evening. The series is available to stream internationally on Disney+.
