What is a tuberculosis (TB) screening? A tuberculosis screening test checks to see if you have the bacteria (germs) that cause tuberculosis (TB) in your body. TB is a bacterial infection that mainly attacks the lungs. But it can also affect other parts of the body, including the brain, spine, and kidneys.

A rapid sputum tests is used to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) when other tests show that a person probably has TB. Rapid sputum tests are also called nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs). One of the best ways to diagnose TB is through a sputum culture.

The tuberculosis (TB) blood test, also called an Interferon Gamma Release Assay or IGRA, is a way to find out if you have TB germs in your body. The TB blood test can be done instead of a TB skin test (Mantoux). There are two kinds of TB blood tests: QuantiFERON®-TB.

The two-step test is NOT the usual PPD skin test in which you receive an injection of PPD and the test area is observed one time at specific time frame. The two-step PPD test is used to detect individuals with past TB infection who now have diminished skin test reactivity.

Best practice indicates that a two-step tuberculin skin test (TST) involves two tests performed within one to four weeks of each other. The second test can be completed up to one year from the first test, provided there has not been an exposure to infectious tuberculosis (TB) disease during that time period.

How do you prepare for the test? In general, there's nothing you have to do before this test, unless your healthcare provider asks you to.

This means you probably have TB germs in your body. Most people with a positive TB skin test have latent TB infection. To be sure, your doctor will examine you and give you a chest x-ray. You may need other tests to see if you have active TB disease.

Tuberculosis testing is not currently available with an at-home kit. Tests for both latent and active TB infections require careful administration and interpretation by a health professional in a medical setting.

Interpreting test results. The skin test reaction should be read between 48 and 72 hours after administration by a health care worker trained to read TB skin results. If a patient has symptoms of TB disease, health care providers should not wait for TB skin test results before starting other diagnostic tests.

Although it is spread in a similar way to a cold or the flu, TB is not as contagious.
